OFFICE NOTICE OF TRANSITION
With heartfelt sympathy and deep reverence, we announce the peaceful transition of an esteemed Civil Rights Leader, community advocate, and servant of justice,
Mr. Bennie Robert Rountree peacefully transitioned on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, at the blessed age of 91. A dedicated champion for equality and social justice, he faithfully stood alongside some of the nation’s most influential civil rights voices, including Martin Luther King Jr. and Jesse Jackson, devoting his life to uplifting communities and advancing the cause of freedom and justice for all people.
A loyal advocate for human rights and community empowerment, Mr. Rountree served faithfully as the 2018 State President of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, continuing a legacy of leadership, service, and activism throughout Eastern North Carolina and beyond. His unwavering commitment, wisdom, and courageous voice left an indelible mark upon all who knew him.
The Homegoing Celebration will be held at 1:00 PM, Friday, May 15, 2026, in the sanctuary of Emmanuel Community Unison Baptist Church, 3501 Speight Seed Road, Winterville, North Carolina.
Interment will follow in Brown Hill Cemetery, Greenville, North Carolina.
A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.
Mr. Rountree’s life and legacy will forever stand as a beacon of courage, leadership, faith, and unwavering dedication to civil rights and the betterment of mankind. His memory shall continue to inspire generations to come.
